Outstanding NDSU alumni to be honored at Homecoming

The Alumni Association will honor four alumni award recipients for 2004 at the Alumni Honors Dinner scheduled for Friday, Oct. 15, at the Fargo Holiday Inn. The social is scheduled for 6 p.m., followed by dinner and program at 6:45 p.m. The event is open to the public. Tickets are $30, and can be reserved by calling Kristi Weston at the Alumni Association at 1-6807.

Horizon Award

The Horizon Award is given in recognition of individuals who graduated from NDSU within the past 10 years and have distinguished themselves in their professional fields and/or service to their community.

The award recipient is Donald F. Brophy, who received a bachelor's degree in pharmacy in 1992, and a doctorate in pharmacy in 1994, both from NDSU. Currently an associate professor of pharmacy and internal medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University/Medical College of Virginia, Richmond, Brophy is recognized as an expert in nephrology pharmacotherapy. One of the youngest pharmacists to be elected fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy, FCCP, has received VCU.s pharmacy clinical teacher of the year award, and has several pieces in biomedical literature. He is board certified in pharmacotherapy.

Brophy completed post-doctoral residency training at The Ohio State University and Purdue University, where he specialized in internal medicine and nephrology.

Heritage Award for Alumni Service

The Heritage Award for Alumni Service signifies outstanding volunteer service to NDSU.

The honoree is Nancy Johnson Jordheim, who graduated from NDSU in 1971 with a bachelor's degree in English and speech education. Jordheim also received a master's degree in education from Arizona State University, and a master's degree in guidance and counseling from Minnesota State University Moorhead.

Jordheim's career has included teaching, counseling and administration. She has been the Fargo Public Schools' assistant superintendent for human resources since 1995.

Currently serving on the NDSU Foundation board of trustees, Jordheim has been a member of the Alumni Center building committee, NDSU presidential search committee and the Alumni Association board of directors. She is involved with the National Association for School Personnel, the Society for Human Resource Management and the Teacher Education Accreditation Council. Her honors include the Warren E. Schull-North Dakota Student Council Adviser of the Year and the YWCA Woman of the Year in Education.

Alumni Achievement awards

Alumni Achievement awards are given to alumni who have excelled in their chosen profession. Awards for 2004 go to Don Laskowski and Dr. Thomas P. Moyer.

Laskowski received a bachelor.s degree in electrical engineering from NDSU in 1960. The founder of Wood- Mizer Products Inc., a woodworking equipment company, Laskowski holds several patents for woodworking equipment. His career began at Universal Electric Co, in Michigan, later joining Kooltronic Fan Co. and Emerson Electric Co. In 1973, Laskowski and his four teenage sons formed Gerbil City, a company that produced gerbil cages.

Wood-Mizer Products started with two employees in 1978 and grew to 650 employees over a span of 24 years. It includes six U.S., four Canadian and seven European locations, and numerous selling agents in more than 100 countries worldwide. Laskowski retired from active management in 1996.

His honors include the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year and Indiana's International Business Person of the Year. He is actively involved in mission work.

Moyer earned a doctoral degree in biochemistry from NDSU in 1977. He is a member of the medical staff in the department of laboratory medicine and pathology at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn. He also serves as chair for the division of clinic biochemistry and immunology, professor of laboratory medicine in the Mayo College of Medicine and director of the drug and pharmacogenomics laboratory.

Moyer's academic interests have focused on therapeutic drug monitorig and pharmacogenomics. He has developed and implemented 94 diagnostic laboratory tests and published more than 220 scientific articles, books and chapters on topics in laboratory medicine.

Moyer is president of the American Association for Clinical Chemistry, and is chair of its board of directors.
